SUMMARY:In Conversation with Paul Hawken: Solving the Climate Crisis in One Generation
DESCRIPTION:Join us live online for an engaging discussion with noted environmentalist\, entrepreneur and author Paul Hawken\, creator of Project DRAWDOWN. Paul is joining three Canadian environmentalists on the virtual stage to talk about his new book Regeneration: Ending the climate crisis in one generation.\n \n\n \n \n\n \n Part of the ReSurge Film Festival \n \nThis event is the closing session of ReSurge: Canadian Film Festivals for a Liveable Climate — a high-impact gathering of film festivals celebrating the 10th anniversary of the WaterDocs Film Festival.\n \n\n GET YOUR TICKET NOW\nMAKE A DONATION \nNote — ticketing and donations are separate. \nDonations are highly appreciated\, but voluntary. Receipts will be used to offset production costs\, with any surplus split between the partners. It will enable us to keep creating high quality events to promote climate action! \n \n  \n\n Introducing Regeneration\nDrawdown Alberta is excited to present an evening with Paul Hawken in partnership with Drawdown Toronto\, Drawdown BC and Water Docs\, as the closing event of the Resurge Film Festival. \nPaul is joining us to talk about his latest book Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in one Generation\, and will be engaged in conversation with three important and exciting Canadian environmental voices: Allie Rougeot\, Bryanna Brown and Melanie Hoffman\, who each bring unique experiences and perspectives. \nRead their profiles below. \n \n\n Regeneration has two meanings. It refers to regenerating life on earth. And it refers to a new generation of humanity coming together to reverse global warming. \n—Paul Hawken \n \n\n Forging new partnerships across Canada\nThis event is the result of cooperation between Drawdown movements in Alberta\, British Columbia and Ontario. We want to build connections and break out of separation to ensure a world that is healthy for the children of all species for generations to come. As Drawdown movements\, we recognize the importance of local\, community-based action to realize national climate goals. \nIn addition\, we rely on a solid\, local partner — Ecologos\, behind the WaterDocs film festival and the Resurge Film Festival\, which this event is part of. Ecologos\, is a 23-year registered environmental charity protecting water and a liveable climate\, and is a longtime collaborating partner of Drawdown Toronto. Water Docs/Ecologos programs focus on our vital connection to water and its centrality to climate. We work to evoke a spirit of reverence for water\, inform about threats that imperil water\, and inspire citizen action to protect water and its many effects on climate change.\n \n\n Presented by\n \n \n \n \n \nParticipant Profiles\n  \n\n \n \n\n Paul Hawken\nPaul Hawken starts ecological businesses\, writes about nature and commerce\, and consults with heads of state and CEOs on climatic\, economic and ecological regeneration. He is the founder of Regeneration.org and in September 2021 published his latest work\, Regeneration: Ending the climate crisis in one generation. His previous book\, Drawdown\, The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming debuted in 2017 as a New York Times bestseller and is currently in 18 languages. He founded Project Drawdown\, which worked with over two hundred scholars\, students\, scientists\, researchers\, and activists to map\, measure\, and model the one hundred most substantive solutions that can cumulatively reverse global warming. He is published in 30 languages and his books are available in over 90 countries. \n \n\n					  \n \n \n\n					  \nBryanna Brown\nBryanna Brown is Inuk and Mi’kmaq from Nunatsiavut\, Labrador. She came up with the idea of “Land Back” to advocate for sovereignty for Indigenous peoples\, as well as Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities\, highlighting land ownership for environmental protection and self-determination. She is on Indigenous Climate Action’s National Steering Committee and Climate Policy Advisory Council. She advocates for the rights of women\, Indigenous Peoples\, environmental injustice in relation to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG)\, persons with disabilities\, mental health\, Indigenous food security\, and anti-human trafficking. Bryanna is a traditional story teller and knowledge keeper\, using her own experience of being personally displaced by environmental racism and natural resource extraction and its relationship to the exploitation of Indigenous women.\n \n\n \n \n\n Allie Rougeot\nAliénor’s interest for human and environmental rights started during her childhood in the South of France\, where she became vocal on topics of biodiversity loss\, women’s rights\, refugee rights and climate change. These interests led her to the intersectional topic of climate justice\, but it was only when she moved to Canada at the age of 17 that she truly understood the need for broad and collective mobilization for climate action. This led her to co-founding and coordinating Fridays for Future Toronto while completing a degree in Economics and Public Policy at the University of Toronto. Graduating in 2021\, Allie is now working as Climate and Energy Program Manager at Environmental Defence\, a leading Canadian environmental advocacy organization\, working with government\, industry and individuals to defend clean water\, a safe climate and healthy communities.\n \n\n \n \n\n Melanie Hoffman\nMelanie Hoffman (she/her) is a community-focused leader in education and science communication. She is Lead Mentor for Alberta with the Climate Reality Project Canada\, and collaboratively kickstarted the Drawdown Alberta movement focused on reconciliation and community climate solutions. She is the Program Manager for Capital Region EcoSchools. A Ph.D. chemist\, she taught at two innovative liberal arts universities before directing community climate solutions education projects with Edmonton’s King’s Centre for Visualization in Science. Born and raised in the German Rhineland in a tight-knit community\, Melanie loves a good laugh\, and values her neighbours and the land\, respect for what is local\, and curiosity for what lies beyond.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
DESCRIPTION:Opening Hearts and Minds with Evidence-Based Communication Techniques (2 hours) \nWant to build your skills for lobbying and climate conversations\, particularly those that are difficult or oppositional? In this workshop we will review different states of the human nervous system\, and explore how knowledge of these can help us to be better communicators. We will connect this to the skills of “Motivational Interviewing\,” which have been shown in numerous studies to facilitate change in healthcare settings. These skills can also lower the temperature in our political conversations\, helping us to connect and find common ground with members of Congress and others. Led by John Sabin\, CCL Great Lakes Regional Co-coordinator\, and Tamara Station\, CCL Education & Resilience Coordinator.

SUMMARY:Building a Sustainable World: Our Diet and the Climate Crisis - Rotary Climate Action Talk
DESCRIPTION:“Global food production threatens climate stability and ecosystem resilience. It constitutes the single largest driver of environmental degradation and transgression of planetary boundaries. Taken together the outcome is dire. A radical transformation of the global food system is urgently needed. Without action\, the world risks failing to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.” – Dr. Johan Rockstrom\, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research\n What we choose to eat has an enormous impact on planetary health. The IPCC’s recently-released report made clear that either we pull out ALL of the stops and drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions everywhere we can NOW (especially methane)\, or we accept responsibility for causing a climate catastrophe and bequeathing to our kids and grandkids a severely degraded planet\, far less suitable for human habitation.\n Dietary change is simple\, fast\, and effective. It doesn’t require political will\, new technology\, trillions of dollars of investment nor decades of implementation. It will unequivocally lead to improved human health and lower rates of chronic disease\, including obesity\, type 2 diabetes\, heart disease\, hypertension\, high cholesterol\, some cancers and even Alzheimer’s Disease. Globally\, it is likely that trillions of dollars will be saved in health care expenditures. And all it takes is a conscious choice by every single one of us to eat more plants and fewer animals starting today. Andrea and Ambaree\, Co-Chairs of the Plant-Rich Diet Task Force under the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG)\, have a mission inspire people around the world to shift to plant-rich diets to protect and preserve our planet. To that end they will share tips for how to successfully experiment with building a plant-rich diet that works for you. \nAndrea Wotan\n Andrea earned her Master of Public Health degree in Nutritional Sciences and completed her training to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Andrea founded an online plant-based nutrition coaching practice and just joined MasteringDiabetes.org as a Health coach working with individuals to improve and\, in the case of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes\, reverse their condition. Andrea earned her BA in Economics from Stanford University and had a decade-long career as an investment banker\, working with technology companies in Silicon Valley and around the world. \nAmbaree Majumder\n Ambaree is a second generation Rotarian\, a member of the Rotary Club of Marina City in Singapore. She is an IT Business Analyst by qualification but for the past few years she has been spending most of her time as a Social Entrepreneur giving talks\, writing and conducting workshops about how leading a lifestyle that is in-tune with the well-being of our planet also benefits our health and fellow human beings. She is certified in Plant-based Nutrition and Food Sustainability from Cornell.

SUMMARY:Let's Talk Community! with Shani Graham from sunny Western Australia (formerly West Coast of Canada)
DESCRIPTION:Shani is going to talk to us about the The “West Beacy Bunch”\, the community of 350 houses around her. The informal community group is “exclusively inclusive” – exclusive in that you can only “join” if you live in the defined Beacy Bunch area\, but inclusive in that the group focuses on making sure that everyone in that area is involved. Like many groups\, the Bunch is very active – with bonfires\, movie nights\, shared dinners\, tree planting days\, yoga\, cooking classes\, olive oil pressing\, plant swaps . . . . . . . something at least once a month. But the difference is there are no committees\, budgets or planning meetings – just passionate people wanting to do something to make their world more connected\, sustainable and resilient. \nInterested to hear more? – come join the conversation! \nBefore this workshop\, you should check out Shani’s TED talk about her previous home in Hulbert Street\nTake a street and build a community: Shani Graham at TEDxPerth – YouTube \nPlease join in 5 to 10 minutes early (bring your cuppa) as we will starting promptly on 22 June at 6 pm MST \nTopic: Let’s Talk Community with Shani Graham\nTime: 22 June\, 6pm MST /Jun 23\, 2021 07:45 AM Perth \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89372498482?pwd=cGx2eHhNeEc3WE9sbnV1ZW1oYWI2QT09 \nMeeting ID: 893 7249 8482\nPasscode: 173391\nOne tap mobile\n+61861193900\,\,89372498482#\,\,\,\,*173391# Australia\n+61871501149\,\,89372498482#\,\,\,\,*173391# Australia
